The guy who wants to eat Fugu has taken an enforced break from translating Tenjo Tenge (volume 10 isn’t in print yet, and who really wants to scan off the original serial? The paper sucks). Instead he is bringing us some love in the form of Vulgar Ghost DayDream, what he describes as a “Shounen Horror” manga. I think he has put it rather well: the plot revolves around a shapely female who starts the comic in a short skirt and thigh-high boots (hence the Shounen). Additionally this female, the main protagonist Misaki Saiki, happens to be a “necromancer.” From the first chapter, we can glean that a necromancer in this context is somebody who is able to see and converse with spirits, is qualified to perform exorcisms, and has crazy bondage gear on under her clothes that act as an impromptu bodyguard as the need arises.
If you are offended by references to people pissing on each other, or humor about panty-sniffing stalkers, stay clear of this series, as I’m sure that’s just the tip of the iceberg here. As always, when you use BitTorrent to download a copy, please leave your client on for a couple of hours to help with the distribution process.
Shit man, you know I would translate more Tenjo Tenge if I could get ahold of it. 🙂 How come your site comes up before mine in a google search for “Tenjo Tenge”? I guess nobody love me. 😛
Nice site, btw.
fugu
Fugu: first, thanks for translating these. I appreciate the effort and you’ve been doing a fine job (the english reads like english!).
Second, your site ranks great if you look for “tenjo tenge” but search engines are dumb and will sometimes pop blogs above real content-providing sites. My site just happens to be formatted so that search engines have a very easy time indexing them (no cheating, just really straightforward HTML). BTW: You are way above me on Hotbot’s listing, the Webcrawler listing, and Lycos.
As putzing around with HTML happens to be a hobby of mine (see the Webnazi category), I’ll take this as an opportunity to rant a little about your site: My primary recommendations would involve a slight reorganization of how content is displayed on http://mangatranslation.com/ and its subpages. Most significantly of these I’d get rid of the intervening http://tjtg.mangatranslation.com/ splash page, and instead have the navigation on the main site go straight to what is presently http://tjtg.mangatranslation.com/index2.html
A smattering of metadata in the heading of the pages would help too, but that’s hypocritical of me, as I don’t provide that on my pages either 🙂
Anyhow, keep up the good work, and I look forward to future installments of Tenjo Tenge (if the folks at Shueisha would be so kind as to get them published).
A great dark mysterious manga series that seems to borrow the brain cells of Warren Ellis.
I wonder if the illustrious Mr. Ellis (whose work I greatly admire) is familiar with this series at all… I never got the impression that many of the big names in the western comic-book world read japanese manga.
