The MTU is a disruptor of sync and swallower of souls, leaving a path of devastation in its nefarious wake. Look well upon these images, that you may know your enemy, for the MTU is no man’s friend:
Buried in your MPOE, you may be able to find one of these, a small, innocent-looking circuit-board with a fuse and a couple of wires leading off to the rest of your phone-system wiring. If you find one, remove it. If you are weak of heart, call line repair and have them do so for you.
US quarter shown for scale. These nasty little critters dwell inside the MPOE boxes of the unwary, seeking to interrupt DSL service in unusual and unexpected ways. Some will cause bursts of inaudible noise, interrupting connectivity at a set interval, knocking people offline like some diabolical clockwork gremlin, while others will hide away, revealing themselves only by deconditioning the line upon the receipt of an inbound call or hanging up a handset, steadily grinding away at the patience and sanity of those who would dare to surf the Internet.
