Hourly usage for burrowowl.net

After migrating to a new server in May, a lot of little things have changed on this site. A couple of things, namely the habits of the handful of folks that actually visit, have not.

Browsers Used

Internet Explorer, which enjoys a stranglehold on the Internet in general, maintains a slight edge according to the server logs:

  1. 16.86% MSIE 6.0
  2. 15.81% Mozilla/5.0
  3. 2.56% MSIE 5.5
  4. 2.37% Yahoo! Slurp
  5. 1.87% MSIE 4.0
  6. 1.69% MSIE 5.0
  7. 1.19% Googlebot/2.1
  8. 0.74% MSIE 7.0

That Internet Explorer 6.0 (and minor variants thereof) holds the lead, and that Mozilla 5.0 (and minor variants thereof, including Firefox) takes a close second was no great surprise. What was, however, is that Internet Explorer 4 and 5 are being used more frequently than the new beta version. I understand that some small percentage of people out there are using older systems, but Internet Explorer was abandoned for the Macintosh some three years ago, and Internet Explorer 6.0 works on PCs running Windows 98 or later.

Operating Systems

It should not shock anybody that Windows is the predominant platform-of-choice for visitors here, accounting for 79.4% of hits, with nearly half of those being Windows XP. In second place is Windows 2000 at 25.7%, followed by all Macintosh variants at a combined 3.8%. Oddly, more visitor’s browsers reported themselves as a non-OSX variant, which strikes me as unusual. The people I know that use Macs are generally quite eager to stay on top of things, with the latest, greatest version of their system software.

These numbers need to be taken with a grain of salt, as my logs show 12.4% of all hits coming from indeterminate/unknown platforms. It’s possible that a specific browser like Camino isn’t reporting itself as a Mac OS X system.

Search Strings

For some reason, people continue to find this site while looking for pictures of naked cartoon girls. Good luck finding them, gentlemen. A smaller percentage were looking for specifics like Giant Robo or Galaxy Angels, each of which have had a single entry since the inception of this site. The Iron Kingdoms campaign setting by Privateer Press comprises nearly a quarter of the subject matter around here, but only a twentieth of the search results. This should be no big surprise, as any search for IK-related terms like Khador or Cygnar are far more likely to point you to online retailers.
