Sample Fighter: The MacGuyver

Previous examples were all focused on their primary weapon or weapons. A blend of Dodge and Power Attack feats, along with some miscellaneous utility feats make him a handy guy to have around.

the MacGuyver

The MacGuyver never specialized in a weapon. He may not have any particularly impressive stats. He doesn’t rely upon them. Instead he has chosen to diversify and be as generally useful as possible. He’s the party member saying “I could use that” whenever a magic weapon is brought forward that the Longsword addict isn’t interested in. Think of Mac as a thinking fighter who takes advantage of any opening left for him, but leaves few open himself.

In game mechanics, he does what he can to avoid the combat rules being used against him and relies upon his basic nature as a fighter to make his attacks effective. He dabbles in the Expertise and Power Attack paths, but not for the Great Cleave or Whirlwind Attack payoffs, but instead for the subtler feats.

  1. Blind Fight, Quick Draw, Combat Reflexes
  2. Dodge
  3. Power Attack
  4. Mobility
  5. Sunder, Expertise
  6. Improved Bull Rush
  7. Spring Attack

At 9th level Mac doesn’t have the weapon or mount-reliant skills of a Flynn or Dudley, but in every round of combat he has a wide assortment of options open to him. He can Sunder or Bull Rush with impunity. He can take advantage of multiple attacks of opportunity. He can move about a battlefield with relative impunity, and can fight invisible or unseen opponents competantly.
